United Nations: President Joe Biden on Wednesday reiterated the US’s commitment to India’s permanent seat on the Security Council to ensure its credibility.

Addressing a high-level meeting of the General Assembly, he said, “The United States supports increasing the number of permanent and non-permanent representatives in the Assembly. This includes permanent locations for countries we have long supported.

“The United States is committed to this important mission,” he declared.

Washington has long expressed support for India’s quest for permanent residency through various administrations.

It also supports permanent locations for Japan and Germany.

“I believe the time has come for this institution to become more inclusive so they can better respond to the needs of today’s world,” Biden said.

“The United States supports permanent locations for countries in Africa, Latin America, and the Caribbean.

“The United States supports increasing the number of permanent and non-permanent representatives on the Council to ensure that the Council remains credible and effective.”

No clear front-runners for permanent spots have emerged from Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean, although South America’s largest nation, Brazil, has staked its claim.

Among regional priorities, Biden spoke about the role of the QUAT, formed by India, the United States, Japan and Australia.

“In each region, we have pursued new and creative ways to work with partners to advance shared interests,” he said, noting that “the Quad and the Indo-Pacific region are uplifted.”
