The hijab controversy in Iran has escalated to such an extent that now President Ebrahim Raisi has refused to grant an interview to CNN’s female journalists in New York. It was stipulated on his behalf that if women journalists wear hijab, only then Raees will talk to them. If the female journalist did not agree to this condition, this interview did not take place.
Iran is being criticized on social media for this incident with CNN’s chief international anchor Christian Amanpour. Amanpour was scheduled to have an interview with President Raisi in New York. She was going to discuss the hijab controversy that has been going on in Iran for the past one week with Raisi. She had prepared for the interview, but during that, the president’s aide told her that the interview will take place only if she wears hijab.
Amanpur was not ready for this condition. The female journalist said that she is in New York and such rules and conventions cannot be applied here. Finally, the President did not come for the interview. Amanpour then tweeted about the incident. He has also shared a picture of himself with a blank picture in front of him for the President.
The assistant made it clear that the interview would not take place if I did not wear a headscarf. He said it was “a matter of respect” and referred to the “situation in Iran” – referring to protests across the country. 5/7
