Father Allegedly Proposes Romantic Relationship to 17-Year-Old Daughter, Then Embarks on Fatal Shooting Spree, Say Prosecutors

In a terrifying episode that has rocked Tampa, Florida, 42-year-old Michael Banks is charged with going on a violent shooting rampage that sadly claimed one life and injured numerous others, including members of his own family. The horrific sequence of events that transpired last Wednesday has since captivated the country with its unsettling particulars.

A letter that Banks wrote to his 17-year-old daughter seems to have served as the impetus for this unfortunate incident. In this letter, Banks said that she shouldn’t date anybody else and stated that he wanted to have a romantic relationship with her. Court filings that also described Banks’ violent acts afterward revealed this unsettling information.

A Family Discussion Turns Deadly

After knowing of Banks’ intentions regarding his daughter, Banks’ mother and her friend were allegedly in their family home talking about the prospect of evicting Banks before the shooting. After listening in on this talk, Banks pulled a handgun out of his pocket out of frustration and betrayal. He shot his 60-year-old mother and her 52-year-old friend, Josephine Muentes, in a fit of wrath, and Josephine sadly died from her wounds.

A Daughter s Terrifying Ordeal

When Banks focused on his daughter, the violence intensified. She heard the gunshots as she was taking a shower. She tried to block the bathroom door in a last-ditch effort to save herself, but Banks shot through it and just missed her head. Banks shot her in the leg as she ran from the house.

A Confrontation with Law Enforcement

The moment the police showed up, the situation only got worse. Now outside the house, Banks and the officers exchanged gunfire. Interestingly, nobody was shot, and Banks was eventually taken down without a single gunshot wound.

The Legal Aftermath

After being taken into custody, Banks was charged with several offenses, including first-degree murder with a firearm, attempted first-degree murder of a law enforcement official with a firearm, and unlawful firearm possession by a felon. He has at least two past convictions for violent crimes in his criminal history. He is being held without bond at the Hillsborough County jail right now.
