Dr. Srinivas M took charge Director All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) It was a moment of pride for his alma mater New Kannada Government High School in Karnataka’s Yadgir district on Saturday, where students held up his photographs to mark the occasion.
Dr. Srinivas did his schooling in Kannada. His pre-university education was also completed in Yadgir, considered an underdeveloped region. He has shown that Kannada students studying in government schools can achieve higher levels of education.
Speaking to The Indian Express, Dr. Srinivas’ elder brother Dr. Nagaraj M said that he was a student who always won ranks. “My father is a retired Tahsildar. He wanted us to study in Kannada and also sent us to a government school as he always believed that it would help us grow as individuals. He mentioned that my sons should not be inferior to students who studied CBSE or other courses in private schools,” said Dr Nagaraj, director, ESIC Dental College, Kalaburki.
Born on 11 August 1966 to Saroja and Ashappa, Dr. Srinivas joined Ballari Medical College (now known as Vijayanagar Institute of Medical Sciences) where he completed his medical education and pursued his MS and Master of Surgery (MCH) at AIIMS in Davangere. A gold medalist in MBBS and MS, Dr Srinivas always dreamed of achieving something big and worked hard, said his brother. Studying in a government school or in Kannada was never a challenge for the siblings, Dr Nagaraj said, but helped them grow further.
Dr. Srinivas will serve as director for five years or till the age of 65, the central government’s Department of Personnel and Training said in the appointment order.
