Home Minister Amit Shah arrived in Jammu and Kashmir yesterday evening, especially during challenging times in the Union Territory, and these challenges are manifesting in his itinerary for three days starting Monday – the declaration of Scheduled Tribe status for Baharis, which the community has been clamoring for. Decades. It is an important filling in the gap in relations between Baharis and Gujjars and Bakerwals who were given this status in 2001, which gets them reservation in jobs, admission to professional institutes and special schemes developed and implemented for the tribe across UT.

But there is an underlying message that makes the people of Pakistan Occupied Jammu and Kashmir think about how everything is changing in this part of Jammu and Kashmir, Delhi is showering all the gifts and subsidies to take human development to the next level. Residents of PoJK are suffering as the Pakistani establishment uses them to push forward its agenda on Kashmir while doing little or nothing for the people there.

Shah is widely expected to make the announcement in Rajouri on Tuesday as the second leg of his three-day visit and this particular aspect of the visit, which will repeat itself in Baramulla on Wednesday. Rajouri district borders Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir to the south of the Bir Panjal range of the Himalayas, while Baramulla lies to its north, and borders across the Line of Control that divides Jammu and Kashmir between India and Kashmir. Pakistan.

The bordering Rajouri-Poonch belt has a sizeable Bahari-speaking population, so does the north-west Kashmir districts of Baramulla and Kupwara. All these districts have a sizeable Bahari speaking population. Of greater significance is the fact that PoJK is dominated by the Bahari speaking population. Therefore, it has a very important message for the people across the LOC – the tribal and Bahari speaking people of Jammu and Kashmir have been given special privileges in terms of jobs, higher and professional institutions and prominent place in legislative bodies.

The people of PoJk are being ruled by the Pakistani establishment, they are being denied their basic needs and their demand for basic rights is being suppressed by military force. In fact, PoJK does not feature much in the Pakistani government’s national thinking. There is a growing feeling among PoJK residents that they are being treated as second-class citizens.

Their concern has also multiplied as Pakistan has used their land to train terrorists in training camps, especially in areas like Muzaffarabad, Kotli, Rawlakot and Neelam Valley. They are given arms and ammunition training, which affects the local youth and they are pressured to join terrorist organizations like Jaish-e-Mohammed and Lashkar-e-Taiba. Apart from that, the people of the area are angry that the anti-terrorist protests are being suppressed by force. Terrorists among them pollute the local culture and tradition. Terrorists are brought from different parts of Pakistan especially Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa for training. People feel they have lost their voice and alternative thinking.

Rather, this control area is becoming a model for infrastructural development and human development. The center is working hard to uplift the lifestyles of the people. The expected announcement of ST status for Baharis is another step in this direction.
