An inmate in an Alabama jail died 14 days before his scheduled release from an attack in which he was allegedly drugged, raped, hit, and left brain dead, according to reports.

Daniel Terry Williams, 22, died days after a “possible inmate-on-inmate assault” on Oct. 22 at the Staton Correctional Facility in Elmore, Ala., according to the Alabama Department of Corrections.

According to WVTM 13, his family members alleged that authorities initially told them he died of a heroin overdose.

Daniel’s fiancée, Amber Williams, told the source that when she went to see him, he “had bruises all down his arm, like down to his fingers.”

“He had cuts all over his body and bruises on his legs.” “And it was bad,” she said.

Williams died on Thursday, according to a GoFundMe page set up by his father’s employer, who said he had been severely beaten.

“This baby was beaten, tortured, and sexually assaulted by a gang of people at Staton Prison with only 14 days until his release,” states the fundraiser, which has raised more than $10,000.

According to the GoFundMe, when he was brought to the hospital following his attack, medical workers discovered he was brain dead from his injuries.

“The tube has been removed. “He is still brain dead and will not recover,” according to an update on the campaign. “They are going to move him to a room where he will be comfortable for his time left with us.”

The ADOC Law Enforcement Services Division is looking into the matter, although it’s unclear whether it’s a homicide inquiry. The Alabama Department of Corrections did not reply immediately to PEOPLE’s request for additional information.

According to the department’s statement, Daniel was serving a one-year term for stealing.
